If you are the loved one, family member of an Autistic Adult in Crisis and are struggling to navigate mental health services this website is designed to empower, educate and enable you to understand the complex system. Currently, there are 700,000 Autistic adults in the U.K. and research indicates that they are at increased risk of developing mental illness more than the general population by as much as 80%. Sadly, with the crisis in mental health care funding there are fewer support services available to the autism population who need it, and not enough healthcare professionals who are trained to recognise and support mental illness in autistic adults. Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is a stressful time as they leave behind supportive frameworks in education to an isolated, lonely life with limited opportunities to access work and socialise. Families are often left struggling to cope and support autistic adults with mental illness and left feeling increasingly vulnerable. This website will take you through the process of identifying unique mental health symptoms in autistic people, referral to NHS mental health providers, the legal system, police and social services. The goal is to provide information and to raise awareness and build a grassroots effort to enable families, and autistic adults to come together to bring about change.
