The Disability Employment Gap is the gap between the percentage of non-disabled people who are employed (around 80%) and the percentage of disabled people who are employed (around 48%). The government aims to halve this gap and the Work and Pensions Select Committee have recently published a report investigating the Government’s aims. There is a very interesting article on The National Autistic Society website relating to this.
Autistic people often face a number of issues and problems to overcome, not just in finding employment, but also staying in employment. The Work and Pensions Select Committee’s report highlights the role that employers must play in reducing the disability employment gap, as well as other key issues, such as the Government’s planned reduction in Employment Support Allowance for people in the Work Related Activity Group.
The article can be found here and is definitely worth reading.
